Why Meditate?

Meditation has nothing to do with becoming a Buddhist, or learning any Eastern ceremonies or rituals or bowing. It’s simply to find inner peace and tranquillity in our lives.  We all have so much going on in our lives that we very seldom take the time to relax and look within.

What is important is that we learn to work with meditation in order to find benefits from it in our lives.

There are many forms of meditation practice. A good meditation is any that develops awareness of our body and our senses, of our mind and heart. It does not matter what kind you choose. What is more important is that after you choose a form of meditation you stay with it and practise it regularly.

Meditation takes discipline, just like learning how to play an instrument. If you want to play an instrument like the piano for example, it takes more than just a few minutes every day, once in a while or here and there. If you really want to learn any skill you have to have perseverance, patience and systematic training.

So pick a type that appeals to you and practise it, regularly. Work with it every day if you can, work with a teacher or find circumstances where you can sit together with other people. The more you practise the more you will develop your capacity to open to the present moment.

Over time you will develop patience, compassion and you will be open to everything that is now.
